• One US Size N (9.0 mm) crochet hook

Gauge

7.5 sts x 5 rows in dc pattern = 4” (10 cm) square

Notes

• Chain 2 at the beginning of each round DOES NOT count as a stitch.
• Many patterns that are made in double crochet will call for a chain 3 at the beginning of each round. If you prefer a chain 3, by all means, you may use it. I feel chain 3 is too long and prefer chain 2.
• Join the end of each round with a slip stitch into the first stitch.
• This pattern is written in American crochet terms.

Stitches and Techniques

magic adjustable ring: Loop yarn around the 4 fingers of your left hand with working yarn on right (knuckle side) and tail on left (palm side). Draw up a loop of working yarn from the knuckle side of your fingers from back to front. Place your thumb in that loop and chain 2. Place your crochet hook in that chain loop and begin round 1. When Round 1 is complete, tug the tail yarn to close the hole.

dc: double crochet - Yarn over, insert hook under both top loops of stitch, yarn over, draw yarn through stitch, yarn over, draw yarn through first 2 loops on hook, yarn over, draw yarn thru next 2 stitches on hook.

scblo: single crochet in back loop only - Insert hook under back loop of stitch, yarn over, draw yarn through stitch, yarn over, draw yarn through 2 loops on hook.

sl st: slip stitch - Insert hook into stitch and draw yarn through this stitch and existing stitch on hook in one motion.

Pattern

Round 1: Make 12 dc stitches in a magic adjustable ring. Join last stitch and first stitch with a sl st.

Round 2: Chain 2, * 2 dc in each stitch; rep from * around – 24 sts. Join last stitch and first stitch with a sl st.

Round 3: Chain 2, * 1 dc in next stitch, 2 dc in following stitch; rep from * around – 36 sts. Join last stitch and first stitch with a sl st.

Rounds 4 – 8: Chain 2, * 1 dc in each stitch; rep from * around. Join last stitch and first stitch with a sl st.

Rounds 9 - 10: Chain 1, * 1 scblo in each stitch; rep from * around. Join last stitch and first stitch with a sl st.

Finishing

Cut yarn, leaving an 8” (20.5 cm) tail. Thread yarn needle with tail and weave in ending yarn tail on inside of hat. Repeat with beginning yarn tail and trim off any excess yarn.
